Trane XL824 Thermostat User Guide and Troubleshooting

Trane XL824 Thermostat is a programmable climate control thermostat. Its external features, including colored touch screens, speak volumes of the sophistication of this thermostat.

Its compatibility with the home Nexia intelligence system offers limitless possibilities, including heating and cooling systems, smartphones, PC, and tablets.

If you have recently purchased this thermostat, you are probably confused about how to operate it. Here’s a complete guide from setting up an installation to trouble is shooting.

How to Set Up Trane XL824 for the First Time

Assuming you have just purchased your thermostat, the first step is setting it up. However, you will need the following

  • High-speed internet connectivity
  • Wi-Fi network name and password
  • A valid e-mail address

Ensure your thermostat is connected and powered with new batteries.

  • Press the ON button to Turn it on
  • Go to set up wizard which allows you to connect the XL824 to Nexia™ Home Intelligence

The next step is accessing the setup wizard that will assist you in installation.

Accessing set up wizard

  • Go to MENU
  • Then SETTINGS
  • Select USER SETUP WIZARD.

This setup process cannot be canceled after it has commenced. Give it time to complete itself.

Go to Screen Settings

Given the touch thermostat is interactive, screen settings play a vital role in communicating with the homeowner, notifications, and allowing customization of features.

  • Adjust the Screen brightness, backlight, screen saver, and color themes that you are comfortable working with.

Proceed to Schedule Settings

Schedule settings help you program your thermostat from daily to weekend temperatures.

  • Set the XL824 scheduling feature to enabled or disabled.
  • When Scheduling is disabled, 1-Touch Presets are available.
  • Guided Scheduling (Scheduling Enabled)

Alternatively, you can automatically create schedules based on answers to a series of questions. 1-Touch Presets (Scheduling Disabled)

Configure heating and cooling target temperatures for Home, Away, and Sleep conditions.

  • The Presets are selectable from the Home Screen.

Wireless networks

Next step Select your wireless network and enter your password. This is crucial since it establishes a connection with other gadgets in the home. Also, it gives you exclusive control over your home without third parties.

If your wireless network is available but not shown in the list, select Hidden Network, and manually enter your network’s name (SSID).

Trane XL824 Thermostat Screen Calibration

Like other Trane models, the sensor Calibration screen is used to change the temperature (calibration of the internal temperature sensor). The temperature calibration can be adjusted by a +/- 7 degrees.

  • Go to the Sensor Calibration screen.
  • Current temperature calibration is displayed.
  • PRESS THE + OR – ON the screen to adjust the temperature
  • It may take time for the changes to be effected.

Trane XL824 Battery Replacement

You will have to change the batteries around once a year or more often depending on your battery quality. Dead batteries compromise the functionality of your thermostat since it powers all the electrical signals and actions of the thermostat. Also, they may be the reason why you are having a blank thermostat.

  • Turn the power off either using a circuit breaker or fuse box
  • Remove the security screw at the bottom of the thermostat
  • Grab the top and bottom of the thermostat mounted on the wall(control plate)
  • Pull it off the wall gently
  • It will reveal the batteries on the backside.
  • Remove each battery one by one careful not to damage the terminals or thermostat
  • Grab the batteries
  • Get some fresh batteries(Triple AAA) and insert them into the battery slots
  • Pay attention to the staggering terminals (anode and cathode) indicated by the + and – sign when replacing the batteries.
  • Put the thermostat back on the wall careful to make it fit as before
  • Press the “Configure” button at the back of the control head. A wrench-shaped icon will appear on the display.

How to Remove Trane XL824 Thermostat Cover

Trane thermostats are made up of two parts of the wall(wall plate and control head). The control head is usually referred to as a cover. It also contains a battery compartment. Here is how to go about it.

  • Turn the power off either using a circuit breaker or fuse box
  • Remove the security screw at the bottom of the thermostat. (Do this by turning it counterclockwise with the screwdriver.)
  • Pull the existing control head off the backplate.
  • Depress the clip on the underside of the control head

Considering the thermostat is run using the software, updates are inevitable. You can do this either manually or automatically.

Automatic Software Upgrades are possible when the XL824 is connected to a Nexia™ Home Intelligence account. The software upgrades occur automatically and do not require user intervention especially if you have reliable internet connectivity. In such a case you don’t need to do anything.

Alternatively, you can opt for manual Software Upgrades. The procedure requires a computer with reliable Internet connectivity, a USB Flash Drive, and a USB connector. This is how to go about it.

  • Access Trane.com/residential from your computer.
  • Select Thermostat & Controls.
  • Click on the XL850
  • select Download Latest Version Software
  • Follow the on-screen prompts.

Trane XL824 Blank Screen Fix

Before you fix your blank screen it is important to know the possible reasons for this.

  • Dead batteries- this is self-explanatory, the battery powers the functions of the thermostat. Dead batteries may give mixed signals like blinking during recharge or a flat-out blank screen. To remedy this, adjust the screen settings to brighter.
  • Blown fuse- a blown fuse would mean no completion of the circuit for electricity to flow. You can replace the burnt-out fuse with a new one to restore function to your thermostat.
  • Tripped float switch-this is arguably a simple problem to solve, just reset your circuit breaker
  • Tripped circuit breaker-a bank screen is inevitable if your circuit breaker trips.

  • Turn the power off at the home’s circuit breaker panel, or fuse box.
  • Switch the circuit breaker for the HVAC system alternatively removing the fuse.
  • Remove the security screw at the bottom of the thermostat. (Do this by turning it counterclockwise with the screwdriver.)
  • Pull the existing control head off the backplate.
  • Depress the clip on the underside of the control head
